Government Fuel Support Measures for UK Businesses

Businesses operating across transport, logistics, agriculture and construction are set to benefit following the Government’s latest announcement aimed at reducing pressure on fuel-reliant industries.

The newly introduced measures are designed to provide immediate financial support at a time when many organisations continue to manage rising operational costs, supply chain pressures and evolving regulatory demands.

The Government has confirmed:

  • The 5p fuel duty cut will remain in place for the rest of the year
  • A 12-month HGV Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) moratorium, with renewals reduced to £1
  • A temporary reduction in red diesel duty from 10.18p to 6.48p per litre from 15th June until the end of the year

For many commercial operators, these changes could deliver meaningful cost savings across day-to-day operations, particularly for businesses with large vehicle fleets, plant machinery or high fuel consumption requirements.

Supporting Fuel-Reliant Industries Through Continued Uncertainty

At NWF Fuels, we work closely with customers across multiple sectors and understand the pressures businesses continue to face.

From fluctuating fuel prices and operational overheads to sustainability targets and energy transition planning, commercial fuel users are navigating an increasingly complex landscape.

While the Government’s latest interventions offer welcome short-term relief, businesses are also focusing on longer-term priorities such as:

  • Improving fuel efficiency
  • Managing operational resilience
  • Reducing downtime
  • Exploring lower-carbon fuel alternatives
  • Strengthening supply security

As one of the UK’s leading fuel distributors, NWF Fuels remains committed to supporting customers with dependable fuel supply, expert account management and practical energy solutions tailored to their operational needs.

Looking Ahead

Economic support measures such as these provide valuable assistance for industries that remain heavily dependent on fuel to keep operations moving. However, they also highlight the importance of strategic fuel planning and adaptable energy solutions in an evolving market.

NWF Fuels will continue monitoring market developments and Government policy updates closely, providing customers with timely insight and support as the industry evolves.

How to Protect Your Oil Tank and Prevent Fuel Theft

As heating oil prices rise, so does the value of your tank’s contents and the risk of fuel theft.

Oil tanks are an easy target because they’re outdoors, often out of sight, and contain valuable fuel that can be siphoned quickly and quietly. Fortunately, there are plenty of simple, affordable ways to make your tank far less appealing to criminals.

Make Your Oil Tank Less Visible

Making your tank less visible from the road is an effective way to deter opportunists. Trellis panels, shrubs, or a standalone fence panel can help obscure the tank from view. The aim is to keep it discreet without creating full cover that gives thieves complete privacy. Be sure to maintain a separation gap around your tank – Building Regulations require trellis and boundaries to be a minimum of 760mm away from any part of your oil tank.

Improve Lighting Around the Tank

Good lighting is one of the most effective low-cost deterrents. Motion-activated lights illuminate the area when someone approaches, instantly drawing attention. Solar lights are inexpensive, simple to install, and don’t require battery changes.

Fit a Lockable Cap or Lid

A quality locking cap is inexpensive and can significantly slow down would-be thieves. Lockable filler caps, anti-tamper caps, and padlocks make siphoning more difficult.

Options range from simple padlocks available for under £10 from most hardware shops, to “spinning locks” that prevent crowbars and bolt cutters getting a grip, as well as tank-specific locks that secure inspection caps, fill points, and lids.

Install a Tank Monitor and Alarm

NWF Fuels offers tank monitors that provide level alerts. Digital monitors can send a notification or alarm when oil levels are low or suddenly drop, which can indicate fuel theft. We work with oil-tank specialists Kingspan to offer excellent rates on digital monitors, including the Kingspan Watchman Radar – a pay‑monthly option that connects to a mobile app for fuel levels and notifications wherever you are.

Make Access Less Convenient

You can’t block the tank completely, but you can make the approach more difficult. Securing access by locking gates or doors discourages quick in-and-out thefts.

Add Visible Security Measures

Even inexpensive visual deterrents are effective. A basic Wi‑Fi camera or video doorbell near the tank area alerts you to movement and records activity. Making cameras visible, along with low-cost signage such as “CCTV in operation” or “Property monitored,” further strengthens the deterrent.

Fuel theft is usually opportunistic. By keeping tanks out of sight and adding lighting, lockable caps, basic alarms, and visible security, you greatly reduce the likelihood of being targeted — all without major expense or structural changes.

Extending the Ban on Oil Boilers: What You Need to Know

In a significant recent announcement, the government has unveiled its decision to extend the ban on home heating oil boilers until 2035, marking a major shift in the timeline for phasing out fossil fuel heating systems. This news impacts homeowners, the environment, and the heating industry as a whole. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the details of this decision and what it means for you.

Extending the ban on oil boilers banner

Understanding the Extension to the boiler ban

The extension of the ban on home heating oil boilers until 2035 signifies a substantial adjustment to the original plan. Under the new policy, households will not be required to transition to alternative heating systems until they replace their boilers after the year 2035. This offers a welcome reprieve for those who rely on home heating oil systems, allowing them more time to prepare for the switch.

Crucially, the government has amended the target to an 80% phase-out rate by 2035. This means that by that year, that only 80% of homes will need to have transitioned away from oil boilers to more sustainable heating options.

Exploring Sustainable Alternatives

As the transition period to 2035 unfolds, homeowners and the heating industry as a whole will have the opportunity to explore and invest in sustainable alternatives. One promising option is the use of renewable liquid fuels, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). These fuels offer a greener alternative to traditional heating oil and can be a viable choice for those seeking to drastically reduce their carbon footprint with very little or no work required to the existing heating system.

Exemptions and Support

It’s important to note that some households will enjoy exemptions from the requirement to transition beyond 2035. These exemptions will likely be based on specific criteria, such as the availability of alternative heating options and the feasibility of making the switch. Additionally, the government is expected to provide support and incentives to help households transition to more sustainable home heating solutions.

What do NWF Fuels Customers Need to do?

We are in regular communication with the UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association (UKIFDA) and we will keep you informed on any essential developments for off-grid heating. Rest assured, we work with the UK’s largest suppliers of liquid fuels and our expert team will be happy to support you in the event of a switch to renewable liquid fuels.

Switching to heating oil

Today, more households than ever before are choosing to switch to heating oil. Offering an effective, efficient and accessible way to heat your home, all year round, this heating method offers many benefits.

Within this article, we will outline the benefits and considerations for switching to home heating oil, allowing you to determine whether this heating solution is the best option for you.

HVO has seen a drop-in replacement to kerosene which has reduced emissions by up to 90%. That’s even less emissions than electricity as we’re burning fossil fuels to generate electricity at the moment (not to mention huge windmill propellers going to landfill etc.) So those switching to oil heating can likely retain their heating system too.

Understanding Heating Oil

Heating oil is the name used to describe heating applications in central heating systems. There are two different types of heating oil that you should familiarise yourself with:

Kerosene

Also known as 28-second oil or home heating oil, Kerosene is commonly used to heat residential properties of various sizes.

Gas oil

Gas oil, on the other hand, is also knowns as 35-second oil and is commonly used for agricultural or commercial purposes.

Evaluating Your Current Heating System

To determine whether or not switching to heating oil is the right decision for you, you must assess the performance and efficiency of your current heating system. After all, different heating systems have different costs, with some being more cost-effective than others.

You should also consider the following factors:

  • The heating oil services available in your area
  • Available pricing and payment plans
  • Delivery options
  • Does the supplier have a proven track record?
  • Will you be able to access a reliable supply?
  • If you’re switching to heating oil, you’ll need a heating oil tank, as well as protection and repair cover.

When considering whether to switch or not, you should also bear in mind that suppliers in the fuel oil industry often only serve specific areas. With this in mind, always look as close to home as possible for a heating oil supplier.

A customer choosing a heating oil supplier

Benefits of Switching to Heating Oil

There are a number of different benefits that come hand in hand with heating oil, including:

Improved efficiency and energy saving

Heating oil is both efficient and cost-effective. Because heating oil burns at a higher temperature than natural gas, it delivers far more heat than other heating solutions.

Consistent, safe, and reliable heat

Heating oil is also extremely reliable, providing a steady, and safe heat source. Heating oil only ignites when it’s in the combustion chamber of your boiler and won’t burn in a liquid state.

Considerations for Switching

If you’re considering switching to a heating oil system, you must understand what is involved before making this commitment. As well as the initial switch, there is also likely to be some level of maintenance involved in your new system.

Selecting a Heating Oil Provider

When looking for a heating oil provider, you must take the time to research different providers, so that you can find the best provider based on your needs.

If you are upgrading your current heating oil system, it’s also a good idea to

consult with providers regarding your system selection, sizing, and installation.

Maintenance and Safety Considerations

Regular maintenance and servicing are important as an oil boiler only work properly and efficiently when it burns oil cleanly.

With this in mind, you should invest in a maintenance plan to ensure that your heating oil system remains in sound working order, all year round.

Heating oil is known for its incredible efficiency, safety, performance, and environmentally friendly nature, making it a great heating solution.

Here at NWF, we provide heating oil and commercial fuel across the UK. Heating Oil Delivery- What are the options?

Discover the range of heating oil delivery options available and the key considerations to think about.

If your home is dependable on heating oil, a reliable and efficient fuel delivery service it is of utmost importance to make sure you never have to go without. Reliable fuel delivery keeps your home warm, which is especially important during winter months when temperatures can drop below freezing.

There are many different types of heating oil delivery, so it’s essential you carefully compare them to see which is the best for you and meets your home requirements. Factors to consider include price, reliability, range, and customer service.

This blog will explain the different heating oil delivery service types and the key factors to consider when deciding which is best for you.

Types of heating oil delivery

Automatic delivery

Automatic delivery ensures you are never left without heating oil to heat your home. Automatic oil deliveries are scheduled based on your average oil usage to ensure you always have enough in your tank.

Standard delivery

Standard, or on-demand, delivery means that you only order how much oil you need when you need it. When you are running low, you need to contact your oil supplier to schedule an oil delivery.

What are the benefits of automatic delivery?

There are many benefits of an automated oil delivery, or auto top up, service including convenience and peace of mind. This delivery method ensures that you never run out.

Automatic oil deliveries are calculated by your chosen supplier based on the size of your home, average oil usage, and temperature. Typically, households require more oil during colder months.

The best way to do this is by joining our Priority Club. By joining our Priority Club you receive smart monitor that allows you to monitor your fuel consumption through the app. Here you can set alerts when you are running low. We can monitor your usage and top up up when we see you’ve hit your alert level.

What are the benefits of on-demand delivery?

On-demand delivery, or will-call delivery, requires you to contact your chosen oil supplier when your tank is ready to be refilled. This requires you to monitor your tank and track your oil usage. With on-demand oil delivery, you are totally in control which can help you to manage a budget.

This delivery method does not require you to enter into a contract, so you are free to shop around for the best prices on the market. Once your oil has been delivered, you will be billed at the current rate. This allows you to be in control of your budget and could save you a significant amount of money. For example, with on-demand delivery, you can fill your tank in preparation for winter when the prices are at a seasonal low and avoid filling up during peak season altogether.

To ensure you do not run out of heating oil, you must remember to check your tank often. It is advised you schedule a delivery when your tank is around three-quarters empty. Using an on-demand delivery service does not guarantee same-day delivery. For this reason, allow at least 48 hours, more during peak periods, for your delivery to arrive.

In any instance where you may have unexpected or urgent oil requirements, you can request an emergency heating oil delivery.

Choosing the right method for you

Assessing your heating oil needs

By assessing and measuring your heating oil needs and requirements, you can determine whether you would benefit most from automatic or on-demand oil delivery. The size of your home and tank will be the biggest factors you need to consider. Smaller tanks and big spaces typically require more frequent oil deliveries.

Budgeting considerations

Understanding and calculating your budget will also help you decide which delivery method is right for you. Each delivery method has a number of advantages, but it is important to understand how each can affect your cash flow and remain within budget.

Communication with the delivery company

Clear communication with your oil supplier and delivery company will ensure you receive the right amount of oil when you need it. To ensure smooth and seamless deliveries, make sure you actively monitor your oil usage, inform your supplier of any changes in oil usage, and allow ample time for the oil to be delivered.

Also explore our common FAQs around ordering heating oil online.

Additional delivery considerations

Delivery minimums and maximums

Oil suppliers and delivery companies often impose delivery minimums to increase efficiency and delivery maximums to maintain health and safety standards. In the UK, the industry standard for minimum deliveries of oil is currently 500 litres.

The maximum oil delivery will be determined by the delivery company in accordance with oil tankers.

Delivery fees and pricing structures

Oil prices fluctuate throughout the year and are determined by global supply and demand. Likewise, delivery fees are often higher during peak periods and seasons.

On-demand oil delivery means you will be billed the current rate for your oil at the time of delivery. This means you could make a significant saving by taking advantage of low season prices; however, poor planning could mean you end up paying peak prices.

Delivery reliability and customer reviews

To ensure you receive reliable and regular oil deliveries, it is important to choose a reputable oil supplier. Trusted suppliers offer reliable service, on-time delivery, and outstanding customer support so you are never left without oil for your home.

When choosing an oil supplier, consider customer care, reviews, experience, and reputation to ensure you select a supplier you can rely on.

There are many different types of heating oil delivery, and each comes with its own unique advantages. It is important to consider your needs and preferences when it comes to choosing a heating oil delivery method to ensure your home is equipped with the heating fuel it needs.

One of the key considerations when deciding on an oil delivery service is choosing your oil supplier. Establishing a good relationship with a trusted heating oil delivery company, like NWF Fuels, ensures clear communication, reliable deliveries, and 100 per cent customer satisfaction every time.

Heating Oil Money-Saving Tips: A Stress-free Way of Cutting Heating Costs

Wearing a jumper around the house and turning the thermostat temperature down a little more are increasingly common ways to reduce your oil usage. However, there are smarter ways to reduce your heating bills and even save time.

Heating oil money saving tips banner

Go nuts! Buy during the summer months

Think it’s nuts to bulk buy heating oil during the height of summer? It is! When the sun is out, buying cheap is in, with the summer season being the cheapest time to purchase kerosene according to Office of National Statistics (ONS) data. The reason for this is obvious – people are more concerned about sunbathing than keeping warm in the winter. With a loss of demand, kerosene prices drop. This is when the frugal few buys in bulk ready for the winter. The humble squirrel has it right by stocking up well before winter hits. Take a leaf from the squirrel’s tree and go nuts!

Spread the costs

Squirrel your money away over the summer by setting a reasonable monthly direct debit limit, so you can feel at ease when you’re ready for your next refill. Just like being on the gas grid, by paying by direct debit you can spread the costs of your heating oil. We can help calculate the optimum monthly payments based on your predicted oil usage and previous purchase history.

Go Premium

Like any smart monitor, you can monitor your usage with a handy app. See your tank level at any time and view your previous usage to identify any spikes in usage. You’ll be able to plan your spend better and easily identify when you’re running low at the touch of a button.

We offer a Priority Club service that combines several of the saving tips above with modern technology and premium service levels to cut oil costs from every angle. It’s also our only top that can remove all responsibility and save time too – no need to dust off the dipstick, reach for the phone or layer up with jumpers.

Priority club app

How it works:

  1. Contact us and we’ll welcome you to the club and setup your direct debit
  2. We’ll deliver the OilFox – a smart monitor that tracks oil levels in real time
  3. We can arrange for professional installation or give you clear instructions for self-install

Here at NWF Fuels, we understand that all of our customers are different which is why we offer a few options when it comes to paying for your home heating oil.

Choose from a Heat Plan account where we set up a direct debit to spread the cost by easy monthly payments, pay in advance with a credit or debit card, or pay on delivery – the only card we don’t currently accept is American Express.

Can you provide an estimate for how much heating oil I will need for the season?

How much heating oil you will need depends on a number of different factors including the following:

  • The size and age of your house
  • The heating requirements for your household
  • The insulation quality of your home
  • How long the heating is on and in which rooms
  • The quality of your fuel
  • The efficiency of your boiler
  • The condition of your tank.

While these factors make it very difficult to give a specific number, more information about how much heating oil you might require can be found here.

What are your hours of operation?

You can contact us Monday- Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.
